Thomas McKenney, head of the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs was a champion of the Indian. His legacy was to create portraits of the Indians who at the time where disappearing.McKenney embarked on plans for a publication of the portraits in 1830. In 1865 a fire destroyed almost all of the paintings from which the lithographs were drawn. We have been able to acquire a quality selection of original plates from the first edition octavo set which was published by D. Rice & A.N. Hart in Philadelphia 1854. The complete three volume set, when they can be found, can run upwards of $30,000.
