First Prints Before the sixth century China was the first at printing called Banhua creating multiple sheets of the same image using the wood block printing method. Johannes Gutenberg’s began printing approximately 1436-1450. Gutenberg is also credited with the introduction of an oil-based ink, which was more durable than the water-based inks used in china. As printing material he used both vellum and paper, the latter having been introduced in Europe a few centuries earlier from China by way of the Arabs. Many of these prints are rare produced by wood-cut techniques. Later they began using copper and wood-end engraving as a more durable material.
